About EPS boxes / Styrofoam boxes

EPS boxes (Expanded Polystyrene), also known as styrofoam boxes or polystyrene boxes, are insulating packaging boxes. EPS boxes are made of expanded polystyrene. This is also called styrofoam, polystyrene or EPS. This material has a high insulation capacity and is light and dimensionally stable. In addition, EPS is highly impact-resistant and shock-proof. EPS is insensitive to UV radiation, moisture and mould. By transporting your products in a styrofoam box, your products are always well protected. The insulation capacity of the EPS boxes is determined by the wall thickness. The thicker the walls of the box, the better it insulates.

Why and when do you need insulated packaging boxes?

When you want to transport your goods chilled or frozen, it is advisable to provide good insulation in addition to refrigeration. You can do this by using insulating packaging boxes. By using an insulating packaging box, your goods will remain at the desired temperature for longer. The thicker the walls of the EPS box, styrofoam box or polystyrene box, the better the insulating capacity. So pay attention to this when you want to transport your goods in a cooled or conditioned way.

Is the EPS box suitable for your application?

The good insulating effect, combined with the insensitivity to moisture and the EPS boxes’ light material means styrofoam boxes can be very extensively applied. Especially when you want to use the EPS boxes for transporting products. EPS boxes are often offered as part of a customised total solution. They are, for example, used in combination with a gel pack and absorption mat. Please refer to our total solutions for more information. EPS boxes are a standard choice for one-way transport. EPP boxes (expanded polypropylene) are generally used for return transport, rather than EPS boxes.

Usually styrofoam boxes are used for one-way transport of fish, food, pharmaceuticals and medical products. Within the pharmaceutical industry, EPS boxes are often used to transport cooled or uncooled medicines. Within the medical sector, Tempex boxes are often used to send blood samples. Due to the good insulating effect, combined with the insensitivity to moisture and the light material of EPS boxes, the applicability of these polystyrene boxes is very broad.

EPS boxes with or without leakage holes

The EPS box is available with or without leakage holes. In almost all cases, an EPS box without leakage holes is chosen. The variant with leak holes is mainly used for shipments with flake ice. Flake ice is used, for example, to cool fresh fish. The flake ice melts during transport and melt water ends up in the box. By choosing an EPS box with leakage holes, the melted flake ice or melted water can drain away.

EPS boxes in combination with cooling elements

For a good chilled result, our EPS boxes are usually used in combination with cooling elements such as gel packs. In this way, you actually create a kind of mobile refrigerator with passive cooling. For some goods, it is wise to use absorption mats. These allow any condensation that may be released during transport to be absorbed immediately. In this way, your products will arrive at their destination clean and dry.
